Do you think that young people should take several different kinds of jobs before they take a career in a long term career? (2016.10.15)
People encounter diverse occupational choices on the way to their final long-term career. Wasteful and meaningless as it may initially seem, experiencing several different kinds of jobs does present many benefits. Several factors, such as the exploration of professional interests, the accumulation of multiple skills, as well as social networking, contribute to this issue. Therefore, I note that young people should take various jobs before settling down in a stable career. The reasons will be further illustrated as follows.
First, experiencing different kinds of jobs enables young people to gain access to their real interests. Even though graduates are already enrolled in certain majors during their college period, some of them chose the major not for their interests but because of seniors' suggestions. It is prevalent that some youth end up hating their major-related profession when they really get in touch with it. Hence, only by experiencing various jobs can youth have a better understanding about each profession and their own interest. Take my own example. My major was accounting and I entered the society as an accountant one year ago. After having suffered the tiresome working experience, I found that, as an outgoing girl, I am more skilled at negotiation and communicating instead of sitting in front of a computer and staring at those pale numbers and charts. Therefore, I decided to skip from accounting to marketing, which is more catered to my interest and specialty.
Second, multiple skills, a significant component of a successful career, are achieved by diverse jobs. Not all the necessary skills that are needed in a future career can be shaped through the education in schools. As is known to all, the book only teaches the youth the abstract concept of knowledge. A huge part of the crucial ability is missing here. Different skills derived from various working experience can perfectly fit in the gap, and thus, those young people who are equipped with multiple skills undoubtedly can keep a favorable position in the job market. For instance, my father, a successful businessman who owns a trade company, tried a host of jobs before managing his company. He learned interpersonal skills as a salesman, polished management skills as an HR, and grasped English skills as a translator. All those knowledge and skills are the cornerstone for his ultimate career.
Last but not least, previous working experience of young people can facilitate the enlargement of the social circle. Working in different conditions and associating with various colleagues not only can broaden our horizons but also give us more opportunities to build our networking. As a result, we can take advantage of the human resources needed to conquer the difficulties faced in the future career. According to a previous survey, eighty-three percent of people admitted that they had achieved some goals from getting assistance from their friends, partners, and previous colleagues who can endow them with some resources and privileges. In a nutshell, interpersonal relations is the passport to a better long-term job and even success.
